A rescue operation has been stood down after a damaged boat made it back to shore at Taieri Mouth.

A police spokeswoman said it received reports of a boat taking on water about 9.30am.

A rescue operation was launched, but was stood down after the boat made it back to shore.

The spokeswoman said the boat sustained damage, but everyone was safe and it did not need to be rescued.

A group of people were on the boat, but it was unknown how many.
