Book sale organiser Alison Cunningham said rain and bitter southwesterlies did not deter people visiting collection points across the city during the collection day.
''We've literally had little old ladies standing in the rain with two carrier bags waiting for us.''
Both the Star Regent 24-hour Book Sale, in early June, and Anything But Books sale, next March, had become ''part of the fabric of Dunedin'', Mrs Cunningham said.
Hundreds of boxes were filled during the collection.
Large leather-bound bibles, hundreds of puzzles and fiction books in ''perfect condition'' were among items donated.
People could contact the Regent Theatre box office if they wanted to give items for the two sales.
