A well-known New Zealand children's entertainer teamed up with an up-and-coming children's book author on Tuesday, at a colourful book launch in the Dunedin Public Library.

Former Logan Park High School pupil Rosalind Manowitz, better known as Rainbow Rosalind, performed for Dunedin author's Alice MacLaurin's book launch.

Ms MacLaurin, a graduate of the Dunedin School of Art, got the idea for Hattie Mouse and the Lost Mittens while she was still studying.

The story is aimed at children aged 3-6 and is about a mouse who helps someone else in the community find a pair of lost mittens.

She started by drawing a lot of pictures of the mouse and thinking about it as a ``little character'', she said.

``It definitely just started as a drawing process.''

After graduating, she decided to revisit the idea and worked on the story and illustrations for more than six months.

About 25 young children and their families turned up to the book launch.

Also at the book launch was Dunedin entertainer Miguel Nitis, who performed as Miggles.
