Enrolments for the University of Otago’s Summer School have already outstripped last year’s.

With more than a month left for students to enrol in Summer School papers, enrolments are up by more than 10% on 2020.

The increase has been attributed to concerns about the job market due to Covid-19, which have drawn more people into tertiary study.

Deputy vice-chancellor Prof Pat Cragg said 1804 students had enrolled for Summer School papers already.

Last year, there were 1595 enrolments in total, and 1590 in 2019.

Prof Cragg said the primary reason for the increase was ‘‘almost certainly the disruption and uncertainty Covid-19 has caused to the New Zealand labour market’’.

Students would still be able to enrol until December 15, which meant the total number of enrolments was expected to increase further.

The 2022 Summer School classes begin on January 10 and finish on the February 18.

Of the 50 papers offered, 35 will only be available for on-campus learning.
