Boys out to Trump opposition

Just when you thought stories about Donald Trump couldn't get any weirder, two 9-year-olds from Macandrew Bay School have come up with a couple.

Sam McGee and Dimitri Latton have created zines for the 2017 Dunedin Writers and Readers Festival zine competition.

Zines are small-circulation, self-published magazines of original or appropriated texts and images, which are usually reproduced with a photocopier.

Dimitri's zine is called The Short-horned Lizard's Attack on Trump.

''It's about a short-horned lizard attacking Donald Trump while he's in his underwear.''

''Donald Trump throws him out the window into a clone machine, which creates heaps and heaps of short-horned lizard clones which squirt blood from their eyes.

''They squirt blood all over America, but the Mexicans are protected from all the blood because of the gigantic wall between America and Mexico. His plan to keep the Mexicans out has backfired.''

Sam's zine is called While Trump's Asleep, and features an imaginary look into the president's state of mind.

''Basically, Donald Trump wants to rule the world, but when he falls asleep, something happens to him.

''His muscles bulge, he wears lipstick, he gets a tattoo and his hair grows longer out of his silly hair-do, and then he decides to knock down the wall between America and Mexico.

''But the next morning when he wakes up, he screams: 'Why did I do that? Why did I do something sensible?'

Macandrew year 6 teacher Christine Ward said 60 pupils at the school entered the competition. They were asked to take a sheet of A3 paper and fold it into an 8-page booklet, which they could fill with whatever wacky, creative, smart story ideas they wanted.

Most were about fun and exciting things that had happened to the pupils, but some of them were embarrassing true stories with a creative twist.

''There's one called The Day My Togs Ripped in the Pool - which is a true story.''

Entries for the competition close tomorrow. They will be judged by authors Kate De Goldi and Paul Beavis. The winners will be announced in May.
