King’s High School year 13 dean Jeremy White said the boys were encouraged to take part because it was a chance to celebrate the school’s place in the beachside community, and getting past the shortest day of the year.
"I think they would agree that the shock of the first splash told them that we were deep in winter and there were a few shivers as the boys headed back up to the Esplanade," Mr White said.
The internet showed the water temperature was about 11degC, but it felt much colder than that, he said.
"Next year, I think I will take a thermometer."
The event precedes the 94th annual Dunedin Polar Plunge, which will take place at St Clair Beach at noon, tomorrow.
