Having their son start school today is an extra-special milestone for the Whipp family as he will be a sixth-generation pupil at St Leonards School.

Despite his not turning 5 until tomorrow, the school bent the rules to accommodate Bradley and allow him to start with his peers he was following from St Leonards Playcentre.

Bradley, who has Down's syndrome, had been visiting the school grounds regularly to get him used to the surroundings, his father, Brendon, said.

"I don't think he has grasped the concept yet," he said of Bradley's new adventure.

His mother, Sandra, said the school had been fantastic in making Bradley welcome.

He would be starting in a class of seven, which would be a perfect size for him, principal Verity Harlick said.

She described the school as "very community-oriented" which was shown through his family's relationship with it.

Mr Whipp held fond memories of the school and believed things had not changed much since he was there.

"Children are still playing a lot of the games we played. It still has that feeling of being a small school."

The family was able to track attendance back to 1893 through Bradley's great-great-great-grandmother Janet Marr (nee Kyle).

From there, the line went through his great-great-grandfather James Marr, to his great-grandfather Walter Marr, to his grandmother Pamela Marr, and then to his father.
