Burglars being picky

Thieves are beginning to target the Corstorphine, Kew and Wakari areas in Dunedin.

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said a "slight increase in burglaries" had been noticed in the Hillhead Rd, Corstorphine Rd and Kew area, with four houses being broken into in the past three days.

The properties had been entered through windows, and items which could be carried easily, such as electronics, were targeted.

"In two of the properties, nothing was taken, so that indicates they are looking for something - valuable things that they can move on easily," he said.

Suspicious activity had also been reported in the Berwick and Farley Sts area in Wakari, with properties being entered while occupants were home, but no items being taken. Accordingly, residents in both areas would notice an increase in police patrols.

"If anyone sees suspicious activity, give us a call; we are more than happy to come and check it out - that's how we catch people," he said.
