A central-city bus hub is expected to begin operations this financial year.

The hub is now in an appeal period until mid-February, after which work can begin.

Otago Regional Council support services manager Gerard Collings said while it would depend on the appeal process, the council anticipated it would be operational this financial year.

The hub would be developed in Great King St between Moray Pl and St Andrew St.

The Otago Regional Council's proposed design shows 10 bus bays on Great King St, one on Moray Pl, toilets, bike stands, electronic timetables, altered footpaths, adapted crossings and new plantings.

Mr Collings said bus routes would predominantly remain the same.

However, the intersections of Princes St and Moray Pl, St Andrews St and George St and lower Stuart St and Cumberland St would be affected.

The council had been doing ``a lot of work with DCC over the last 12 months'' to make sure traffic would be well managed, he said.

``There are likely to be some changes to the way those intersections operate, and we're finalising that.''

City council transport group manager Richard Saunders said traffic lights being upgraded in the Octagon this week were just some of many infrastructure changes needed in preparation for the bus hub.

However, no more were planned at this stage.
