Starters Bar in Dunedin will be allowed to stay open until 3am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during Orientation Week.

The application made by Otago University Students’ Association to extend its bar’s opening hours for three extra days, for next week only, was accepted during a Dunedin District Licensing Committee meeting yesterday.

A one-way door policy will apply from 2.30am.

Association events and venues operations manager Jason Schroeder said extending the hours during O Week aimed to keep up to 450 students in safe and licensed premises for as long as possible.

Senior Sergeant Ian Paulin supported the extended hours and its potential to keep students off the streets, where they might be at risk of being assaulted or assaulting someone.

Committee chairman Colin Weatherall said the committee was happy to grant the request.

"We wanted to ensure that it was in the best interest of the students that are so important to our town.

"We were happy with the assurances given."
