Emergency services attend a single vehicle crash in South Rd, Dunedin, yesterday morning.

The driver failed to take a corner and hit a wall at the Southern Cemetery about 8.40am, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said.

The Fire Service was called because of concern the engine was smoking and could not be switched off, while St John was called when the male driver complained of sore knees.

He was later taken to Dunedin Hospital as a precaution.

The road, which was reduced to one lane, was cleared after 20 minutes, Snr Sgt Benn said.

Council contractors removed diesel from the scene, and spread grit along the street to ''prevent any further problems''.
