Car engulfed in North Dunedin

Emergency services were called after a car was found burning beneath trees near the top of Signal Hill Rd, in Opoho, last night.

The car was a white Toyota hatchback and the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Police and the fire service were called about 10.40pm.

A police spokesman said the car was found about 200 metres from the top of the road and he believed it was "pretty engulfed" in flame.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Ian Littlejohn said a crew from Willowbank Fire Station was there for about half an hour before the fire was extinguished.
