"One war's finished and another has started."

Ray Kingan, who yesterday celebrated 65 years' marriage to Margaret, said a neighbour had made this quip the day before their wedding, referring to the allied forces' victory in Europe and the upcoming wedding.

VE Day's 65th anniversary was celebrated on Saturday.

The joke was not particularly apt as the couple were hardly ever at war.

In fact, their disagreements were infrequent and minor, Mrs Kingan said.

Every couple had their ups and downs, but usually, she and her husband did not fight, she said.

Daughter Shona Sutherland said her favourite piece of marital advice from her father was never to go to bed on an argument.

She has passed that advice to her daughter.

The couple, both in their early 90s, were married in 1945 at the then Baptist Church in Gordon Rd, Mosgiel.

They had met through the church, helped by the fact Mrs Kingan (nee McLellan) was a childhood friend of Mr Kingan's sister.

In World War 2, Mr Kingan served in the Pacific, and was involved in the Guadalcanal campaign.

He was on leave when he proposed, and the two were married soon after, aided by a helpful baker who whipped up a cake at short notice, and a dressmaker friend.

Mr Kingan then had to go back to the Pacific to serve and stayed for the "clean-up" after the Allied victory.

The disruption of the war was followed by 65 happy years, the couple said.

"We've been very, very fortunate. It couldn't have been better," Mrs Kingan said.

Mr Kingan started a freight business, Jones and Kingan Ltd, while Mrs Kingan was a keen gardener, baker and home decorator.

The pair raised two daughters and a son.

They enjoyed family holidays at their crib at Luggate.

Both were meals-on-wheels volunteers for many years, stopping only in their mid-80s.

They have four grandchildren and are looking forward to the birth of their first great-grandchild.

To celebrate their milestone, the Kingans had a family dinner at home in Mosgiel on Sunday.
