Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive Terry Davies yesterday announced the family-friendly ''movie afternoon'' would be held on Saturday, November 22.
Members of the public were invited to bring their beanbags, deck chairs and snacks, sprawl out on the playing surface and watch a movie.
Gates would open at 2.30pm and the movie would start at 3pm, screened on a giant replay screen at the Otago Daily Times stand end of the ground, he said.
But first, the public had until 5pm on November 18 to vote for their choice of movie - Despicable Me or The Lego Movie - on the stadium's Facebook page.
Stadium operations manager Coryn Huddy said the chance to get the public out in the middle coincided with scheduled maintenance of the stadium's playing surface.
DVML staff would be gradually stripping away up to 90% of the natural grass over the next month, to expose the artificial turf fibres below, he said.
That would allow the artificial fibres, which had been flattened over time, to be rejuvenated, before a fresh layer of natural grass was sewn, he said.
''Because of the amount of play we've had, the fibres are getting a little bit more buried below the surface. We need to rejuvenate them back up and get them back to the top.''
The work was part of regular maintenance, paid for from within existing budgets, and was expected to cost less than $20,000, he said.
Entry to the movie would be by gold coin and there would be no charge for the stadium car park.
