The bells were ringing out — on Christmas Eve this time — in North Dunedin.

The tolling of the bells welcomed a congregation of about 30 people into the All Saints’ Anglican Church at 4.30pm on Friday.

Each year, the church conducted a Christmas crib service for the children of the parish, in which children were asked to place figurines made of plaster into a model manger.

Vicar Michael Wallace said the figures were "decades and decades old."

Over the years, the faces had suffered some damage, and had all required several repairs.

Mr Wallace said the annual event was "just a lovely, simple service for the children".

The service included a musical activity, which this year centred around the carol Ding Dong Merrily on High. That meant, of course, there were plenty of bells on hand for the children to ring.

Vaccine passes were required to attend the services on Christmas Eve, but would be optional for the Christmas Day service.

Mr Wallace said the decision had been made in order that all factions of the community would be welcome and included in the festivities.
