Lan Yuan Dunedin Chinese Trust, Malcolm Wong said the celebration was the second-most important Chinese festival on the calendar.
"It's really a celebration of the Chinese culture, but it also helps with social cohesion."
The day was a great display of many different cultures in Dunedin, he said.
"That's the purpose of it, for the community and everyone getting to experience different ethnicities."
The festival was now in its fourth year.
