A television set recycling programme has proved hugely popular in Dunedin, with more than 4400 TVs handed in to various outlets.

The Government-subsidised TV TakeBack Programme has been running since March 25 when Smith City in Andersons Bay Rd started accepting TVs under the $5 recycling fee deal. Store manager Vic Veera said they had taken in 2838 by noon on Monday and they had been told they could continue to offer the subsidised fee until May 12.

Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman, Cargill Enterprises and the Dunedin City Council are also offering the subsidy.

The council is offering $5 recycling at the Rummage shop at the Green Island Transfer Station and at Jaco's Yard, in Thomas Burns St, in the city.

Otago RCN e-Cycle co-ordinater Sue Coutts has been working with southern councils and businesses on the TV Takeback and said there were still people unsure about where to take their old TVsShe said the city council sites had received more than 1500 TVs since they started offering the subsidy on April 18.

''People really like that it is so easy and affordable to do the right thing,'' Ms Coutts said.

The council had a quota of 4300 when it started the TV Takeback and the retailers all had their own quota as well.

When the council quota was used up the fee would return to $25 to recycle a TV.

Smith's City storeman Shaun Adie said they had been getting all kinds of TVs dropped in, with some sets weighing up to 60kg.

''There have been a couple of people who have got them in their car and not figured out how to get it out.''

Ms Coutts said the bigger TVs were definitely a two-person job to move them safely.
