Navy Park in Oxford St is undergoing a transformation, with the upgrade project shared between the Dunedin City Council and Dream South D.

The park in South Dunedin will include a new flying fox, a new tower, an inclusive climbing net spinner and a nature play balance trail.

The DCC budgeted $220, 000 for the upgrades to Navy Park, as per year 1 (Capex expenditure) in the 9 Year Plan.

Dream South D said in a statement yesterday its contribution to the upgrade included a new barbecue and shelter, wheelchair-accessible drinking fountain, table and seating, and a sensory woodland walk created using materials repurposed from the original fort built by the Navy.

It said in the statement it was pleased to contribute towards the new play structure, and was very excited to add to the park’s amenities by providing volleyball nets for community use.

The new look park would be opened with a community launch event in mid-January.

Dream South D was a community-led development project in partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs.

Work on the park started around October 6. The playground was closed while this is being carried out.

It is expected that the park will be open by the end of November, and a celebration launch event is planned for mid-January.
