It could have been a hair-raising experience, but blind man Simon Fogarty's colleagues were in safe hands yesterday.

The novel fundraiser by the University of Otago IT team for tomorrow's Daffodil Day raised at least $800 and some proceeds were still to be counted, organiser Rochelle McFarlane said.

Using an electric razor, Mr Fogarty shaved the beards and heads of IT service desk colleagues David Steer and James Inger.

Physics department manager Sandy Wilson was given a mohawk, with a bit of assistance from Dunedin hairdresser James Gibbs. It was then spray-painted orange, to the delight of the audience.

Mr Steer and Mr Inger said they had been nervous before the shave, but it was not as daunting as they had feared.
