Fifty-five people got in the pool to knock out 4000 25m laps in just two and a-half hours.
Kiwi Swim Club swimathon co-ordinator Sally McArley said the 100-year-old swim club was pleased to reach 100km so quickly.
The club took over eight lanes in the pool yesterday, each sponsored by a family or an organisation connected with the club.
With three or four people in a lane at any given time there would have been around 30 people in the pool at any point during the "swimathon", Mrs McArley said.
Some swimmers came for half an hour, some came for an hour.
The club’s president Mike Smith swam laps for the entire two and a-half hours, Mrs McArley said.
Pre-schoolers came and with pool noodles and life vests kicked in the water with their mum or dad for a few laps.
A dozen lap counters kept track of laps swum, and she kept the tally.
"It was just really fun, a bit of a celebration, and kind of a sense of achievement."
The club had about 220 members from 5-year-old learn-to-swimmers, all the way up to the club’s competitive swimmers, she said.
While this weekend’s swimathon and the barbecue that followed it was a celebration for present members, this coming weekend, the club would properly mark its centenary.
A welcome event on Friday, a dinner on Saturday, and a swim meet on Sunday were planned.
Past members were coming to Dunedin from around New Zealand and Australia to celebrate their connection withthe club.
In some families, grandparents, parents and children were all members, Mrs McArley said.
