Newly appointed Keep Dunedin Beautiful co-ordinator Allison Wallace is just a few weeks into the role, and is keen to get the ball rolling on beautification projects across Dunedin.

The role, which sits within the Dunedin City Council, involves working with council waste and parks departments, as well as community groups, to ensure Dunedin looks its best.

An important focus of the role is also to work with a Taskforce Green anti-graffiti team, led by Rick Wilson, which is kept constantly busy removing graffiti from around town.

‘‘There are three people out there every day working on removing graffiti,’’ Ms Wallace said.

‘‘They do a fantastic job keeping our city looking good.’’

Within the council, Ms Wallace is working to gather information from a broad range of departments to gain a better understanding of how widespread graffiti is in Dunedin.

Having come from working as administrator with the Yelloweyed Penguin Trust, Ms Wallace is well versed in working with volunteers, which will stand her in good stead in her new role.

‘‘I’m very keen to work closely with the community, to support our volunteers groups who are really taking pride in our environment,’’ she said.

At present, Keep Dunedin Beautiful is seeking nominations for its annual awards, to be held on July 30.

Nominations close at 5pm tomorrow, so there is still time for last-minute entries.

The awards recognise groups and individuals who have contributed to keeping the city beautiful, paying special attention to their adopted spot, demonstrating community spirit or outstanding service.

The awards celebrate the diversity of work being done in the community, from small grass-roots activities to larger environmental projects, and encourage people to think of friends and neighbours who are committed to keeping Dunedin beautiful.

For more information and to nominate a group or individual, contact Allison Wallace by email at keepdunedinbeautiful@dcc.govt.nz, or by phoning (03) 477-4000
