A KiwiRail flatbed wagon carrying two coal containers derailed at the Dunedin Railway Station yesterday.

A KiwiRail spokesman said 14 KiwiRail staff and contractors used cranes to right the wagon after it derailed about 8am.

The wagon was righted about 1pm, the spokesman said.

The cause of the derailment was unknown and an investigation was under way.

The affected area of the yard was closed until the carriage was righted but no services on the main south line were disrupted, the spokesman said.
