A sketch of the mural Reaching for the Stars proposed for Caversham.

Presbyterian Support Otago (PSO) social worker Amanda Reid said following community consultation, a mural design and colours had been selected for the side of the Fairway Takeaways, in South Rd, but paint was needed before the project could begin.

PSO, the project facilitator, and the Corstorphine Baptist Trust had organised preparation of the wall and funding,

but acrylic water-based paint of specific colours and quantities were needed.

Stickum Co-Operative spokeswoman Aroha Novak said about $800 of paint, including 1 litre each of blue, pink, Y2 orange, Y2 yellow and 10 litres each of white and black and 20 testpots of various colours, was needed.

The mural theme was an idea of people reaching for their hopes and dreams, she said.

''The younger generation is represented through the image of a child, while the history of Caversham borough is acknowledged through the iconic photographs of buildings in the area from the early 19th century.

''The blend of old and new is brought together to create a brighter, hopeful future for the next generations.''

The painters hoped to begin the project by the end of the month, she said.
