Community boards allocate funding

Community boards have decided how to manage the $10,000 the Dunedin City Council gave them to distribute each year.

At the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board meeting in Mosgiel last week, the members were told community boards could continue to give money to community groups outside the board areas but the priority was to groups within their areas.

Board chairwoman Sarah Nitis moved for the board to allocate $4000 to give to community groups and $6000 to fund board projects.

Board member Dean McAlwee was appointed to assist groups make applications, to advise applicants of the board's decision and assist groups to complete their reporting to the board.

The Saddle Hill Community Board moved at its meeting last week to allocate $5000 to community groups and $5000 to board projects.

Board chairman Scott Weatherall was appointed to assist groups and advise applicants of decisions and deputy chairwoman Leanne Stenhouse was appointed to report.

The board gave $675 to Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, which applied for funds to buy a cabinet to house its defibrillator.

Mrs Stenhouse said the cabinet would allow the community to access the unit in an emergency and ''benefit all the community.''

The board gave $517.50 to Christmas on the Domain organiser Justine Weatherall, who applied for the funds to pay for a stage and sound system to provide Christmas-themed entertainment at Brighton Domain on December 21.

Due to conflicts of interest with the club and Christmas event, board chairman Mr Weatherall abstained from voting.

He returned and resolved to start two board projects - $500 for the board to have a box built and filled with toys for storage at the club for the community to use.

Another $200 was allocated for the board to engage with the community at Brighton Gala on January 28.

Mr Weatherall suggested the engagement could be a ''dunk the councillor'' activity.

Cr Conrad Stedman suggested an egg and spoon race.
