The new $2.1 million Mornington Presbyterian Community Centre has done just the thing it was designed to do - bring the local community together.

More than 200 people visited the facility for an open day on Saturday, where Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin spoke of the benefits of the complex for the church and the community.

The building was officially opened yesterday by the Rt Rev Dr Graham Redding (the elected leader of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand) who led the congregation in Holy Communion before celebrating with a community concert.

The centre on Maryhill Tce was first suggested 30 years ago and after many years of "maybes", it was finally built.

The development has increased the size of the existing church eight-fold, allowing a space for the community to use.

Several groups, including Age Concern, indoor bowls and various dance associations, have already expressed an interest in using the new centre.

Calder Stewart began construction of the centre last March after major funding was sourced from the congregation, the Presbyterian Synod of Otago Southland, the Community Trust of Otago and the Alexander McMillan Trust.
