Concern over pest plants

The Dunedin City Council has been called to action on Mt Watkin reserve near Waikouaiti.

The Waikouaiti-Community Board chairman, Gerard Collings, yesterday told councillors considering their plans for the next decade, the board was particularly concerned about the lack of control of pest plants on the reserve.

While aware of budget constraints, he urged the council to at least review its management plan for the reserve and develop a new one over the next three years, so it could start spending money on it after that.

''Mt Watkin is an asset to this city and this council runs the risk of destroying it. The council needs to ensure it is preserved. If we can't preserve it, give it to someone who can.''

The Waikouaiti Coast community also asked, among other things, that public toilets were installed at Waitati and wide community consultation was undertaken before any decision to fluoridate water supplies was made.

Also, while the board appreciated the $10,000 the council gave it each year to distribute to its community for projects, it had ''been appreciating it for nine years''.

Any increase at all the council could see its way to making, would be greatly appreciated, he said.
