Confusion reigns amid bus stop move

Buses were forced to double-park and block traffic to drop off passengers after a bus stop caused confusion in North Dunedin yesterday.

The yellow lines outlining the bus stop near Gardens Corner, in North Rd, had been removed and repainted about 50m away from its usual place.

However, the bus stop sign had not been shifted with it.

Instead, the space where the new bus stop was outlined was directly next to a P30 parking sign.

It led to cars parking in the new bus stop as it was not appropriately signposted.

Steve Hansford, of Dunedin Tramways Union, said the new stop in North Rd was not explained to either the operators or the public and would not be any better than the original stop.

The drivers on that route were ‘‘disappointed’’ the new stop did not allow them to get close to the kerb for older passengers and they also had concerns about hitting the veranda above.

"The drivers thank the public for supporting them, in regards to being double-parked, as the council are still yet to install signage," he said.

Dunedin City Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson confirmed work was under way to shift a bus stop and associated street markings and signs.

The work was due to be completed either yesterday or today and would include changing the signage to match the new layout, she said.

Ms Benson did not provide a comment when asked if the council was aware of the confusion the work had caused.

Such a pro public transport mayor and the DCC do not even consult nor notify with the bus drivers of changes and think it is OK to leave a half-completed job. Something is shockingly wrong for DCC to ad-hoc changes like this, to its own community.

And it wouldn't surprise me if this so-called "mayor" is fully in support of the Govt's scheme to take our water infrastructure away from us.

This 'so-called mayor' IS the mayor. Duly elected and doing a tough job in spite of criticism.

@ "nash", he only got in because people were taken off the list and the votes they received were redistributed, did you still think he got in on his own merits?.

Buses are controlled by the Otago Regional Council, not th DCC.

But Bus Stops are controlled by DCC - maybe the reason for the confusion in the first place?

Sorry Nash, the comments in the article come from the DCC, not the ORC.

To my mind this sort of inept planning and project management comes about when the base requirements for DCC staff, from the top to the bottom, is does the job applicant believe in Greens aims and the need to remove cars from Dunedin's roads.
All other abilities seem to be missing.

Really, if Ms Benson or her staff can't even move a bus stop without seriously stuffing it up, they should resign from their position. And if senior management can't stop this idiocy happening, they should follow Ms Benson out the door.
