Smile, you're on Dunedin police's selfie camera.

The selfie of two police officers snapped on a lost iPhone at the annual Hyde St keg party has gone viral.

The owner of the phone posted the picture online with the following message: ''I was at the Hyde street party down in Otago and lost my iPhone.

''Next thing I know it had been handed into police and they had decided to take a selfie and upload it on to my [Facebook] account.

''Was good to see some humour in the police.''

That story and selfie has been shared thousands of times on Facebook, prompting supportive messages for the quick-thinking officers, Senior Constable Kerry Fegan and Constable Kristyn Adamson.

A Southern District police spokesman said ''it was quick thinking by them, which got the phone back to the owner ... and generated a lot of public trust and confidence''.
