Port Otago staff assessed the damage, following a fire on a Port Otago conveyor belt yesterday.

Several fire appliances were called to the facility about 2.40pm and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Port Otago commercial general manager Peter Brown said an old woodchip gantry was being decommissioned at the facility, and he believed the equipment being used to cut the metal structure may have caused a spark which set the conveyor system alight.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said there were no injuries as a result of the fire.
