A Green Island, Dunedin, couple, Cliff and Valerie Hall, have won a "dream home" on Australia's Sunshine Coast in a lottery.

For the past 12 years, the Halls have bought tickets each year from Endeavour, a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, which provides support, accommodation, training and vocational opportunities for people with disabilities in Queensland.

While on holiday on the Gold Coast last week, they were advised of their win and were able to visit their $A825,000, luxury 328sq m, four-bedroom house in Buderim.

The house backs on to a rainforest sanctuary.

The couple stayed at the house for two nights last week, and were surprised to discover that, in addition to its being fitted with television sets, computers and other household items, the cupboards had also been stocked with groceries.

Endeavour Prize Home manager Wilma Burton said advising the Halls of their windfall was difficult.

After several attempts to contact them, the company got in touch with Mr and Mrs Hall's daughter, who said her parents were holidaying on the Gold Coast.

Mrs Hall said at first she thought the call was a hoax.

Mr Hall said although they were "still in shock", they were delighted because they had never won a major prize before.

"The most I think we've ever won is $30," he said.

Comparing the differences with their 150-year-old Dunedin cottage with its coal range, Mrs Hall said she would need to invest in some rollerskates to get around her new house.

But the Halls have no plans to retire and leave Green Island, as three grandchildren are due to be born very soon.

They were uncertain about their future plans for the house, but thought family members might "be pretty keen on using it".
