A 28-year-old man will appear in the Dunedin District Court charged with careless driving after a car smashed into an empty shop in Port Chalmers.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called after a red Ford Falcon crashed into the shopfront in George St, about 11.15pm on Sunday.

The man was charged with careless driving and received an infringement notice for excess breath-alcohol between 250mcg and 400mcg per litre of breath, the spokesman said.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said an ambulance attended but no-one was injured.

Jason Moore lives in the apartment above the damaged shop.

Mr Moore was nearly asleep when he heard loud ``banging and snapping'' as the car ``took out a planter, rubbish bin and three [balcony awning] supports.''

``I didn't hear any skidding or squealing brakes - just the impact.''

When he looked out the window, he saw the balcony awning ``shaking'' and the Falcon drive out from under it.

The car was extensively damaged and was ``smoking'' and leaking fuel but the driver appeared to be ``unconcerned'' by the incident, Mr Moore said.

``He swore a little bit.''
