Court date interrupts travel plans

A Scottish tourist who allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of All Black rugby merchandise could leave New Zealand with a souvenir of a different kind.

Alistair Greig appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday on two burglary and theft charges relating to taking merchandise from the Champions of the World store.

He was due to fly to Scotland, but instead was remanded in custody and will appear today.

The burglary charges related to him entering the George St store twice last month without permission.

Items allegedly taken include All Black jerseys, hats and polo shirts, and a New Zealand flag.

The Otago Daily Times understands thousands of dollars worth of merchandise might have been taken by the former employee, and further charges were likely.
