Crash blocks central Dunedin street

Dunedin's Stuart St was blocked briefly above the Octagon today after a ute and rental car collided.

The driver of the ute said the rented sedan stopped dead in the middle of Stuart St to change lanes just past its intersection with London St as he travelled uphill just before 5.30pm.

He did not have time to stop and rear-ended the Jucy Rentals Nissan Tiida sedan, he said.

One of the four passengers of the rental car said the group, who spoke limited English, were visiting New Zealand.

The ute remained driveable and was only superficially damaged, but the sedan had sustained more serious damage to its rear bumper and boot.

No-one appeared to be injured in the crash and St John did not attend.

Interesting that it reads like it's the tourist's fault. If someone stops in the middle of the road, regardless of why, then you have to be far enough back to stop without hitting them. Guessing the ute was yet another tailgating Dunedin driver.
