Crash witnesses sought

Police are calling for witnesses to a serious head-on crash on Friday night.

The crash, which happened on State Highway 1 about 1km north of Pine Hill, resulted in the occupants of the two vehicles being admitted to hospital, Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

The crash happened about 5.50pm and involved a green Mitsubishi Triton and a red Toyota Hilux, he said.

Constable Chris Gaffaney said the drivers, a 19-year-old man and a 61-year-old man, were the only occupants. Both had surgery for their injuries.

The 19-year-old was in surgery for most of Friday night because of multiple fractures and the 61-year-old had surgery on Saturday after sustaining a serious head injury.

The crash was still under investigation and it was too early to know if excessive speed, alcohol or drugs were factors, he said.

''We really hope someone can come forward who witnessed what occurred,'' Const Gaffaney said.

''At this stage it's just the two drivers, so we aren't clear on what's occurred.''

Yesterday, both men remained in Dunedin Hospital in a stable condition, Const Gaffaney said.

Anyone with information about the crash can contact Const Gaffaney at the Dunedin police station on (03) 471-4800.
