The driver of a stolen car in Dunedin sped away with a police officer’s hand trapped in a door of the vehicle.

The car was later found on fire in Caversham.

A police spokeswoman said police went to speak to the driver of a vehicle on Wednesday, and an officer’s hand was trapped in one of the car doors when the driver sped off.

The officer was not injured.

Yesterday morning, firefighters and police were called to Caversham Valley Rd where they found the car on fire.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman yesterday said firefighters were called to the scene at 8.55am. As a result, she said, they were treating the fire as suspicious.

The spokeswoman also said it appeared the car had been parked a short way off the side of the road for a while and then had ‘‘suddenly’’ caught fire.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said council staff would be checking to see whether the car was on a public reserve, but as the fire was being treated as suspicious, would not be removing the vehicle.
