North Dunedin was the scene of a road-rage incident yesterday, when a motorist rammed another man's vehicle, before tearing the other driver's T-shirt during an altercation.

Speaking at the scene yesterday, the visibly shaken victim said his assailant had become angry when he noticed him answering his cellphone and failing to indicate before turning left into Duke St from George St near the Willowbank Dairy.

''He came up and deliberately rammed me,'' the man said.

However, the victim said he had a good reason for answering the phone.

''We were waiting for a call from the hospital. My wife's just having cancer treatment.''

After the man rear-ended the vehicle, the pair remonstrated in Duke St and the other man grabbed the collar of the victim's shirt before tearing it half off.

The victim called police and officers were on the scene about 4pm, interviewing him.

The man who had rear-ended the victim's car had apparently fled in his vehicle.

An Otago Daily Times reporter speaking to the victim at the scene was told to stop by a police officer, who interrupted the interview to say: ''How about you let us do our investigation first, before you dip your nose in?''

No cordon was in place at the scene and the victim was speaking willingly.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
