Firework shooter’s charge dropped

A man who was arrested for shooting fireworks at people in Castle St has avoided a conviction.

Jack Hume, 20, was charged with causing criminal nuisance, but the charge was dismissed last month.

A police spokesman said the defendant had been dealt with through "an alternative resolution".

Hume was in Castle St on November 8 when he allegedly aimed a lit firework towards a group outside a flat.

It exploded, he fled the scene, but police later found him in Leith St.

It came just days after mayhem was caused by similar instances on Castle St, forcing firefighters to withdraw when fireworks were shot at a crew dousing a blazing couch.

Three men spent a night in custody for disorder after they allegedly launched fireworks at police officers.

They were formally warned and two of them also received infringement notices for discharging fireworks in a public place.

Weeks earlier, police and fire crews had fireworks shot at them in Castle St after responding to reports of a fireworks fight involving about 50 people.

One man was arrested and held in custody overnight, and received a formal warning.

Yesterday, a police spokesman said while fireworks were legal, police urged users to consider where they used them, fire risk and animal distress.
