A Dunedin man has admitted drunkenly causing a crash, leaving his passenger with six broken ribs and a spinal fracture.

Mohammad Shayaan Sarker, 20, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to drink-driving causing injury.

The court heard that on July 4, the defendant was driving with a 20-year-old woman, whom he knew, in Signal Hill Rd.

It was a rainy night and at 11.30pm, he was travelling at up to 30kmh over the speed limit when he hit a bump in the road causing the car to slide across the centre line and down a large bank.

The vehicle then rolled multiple times before stopping against a large tree.

Alcohol-testing procedures revealed Sarker had a blood-alcohol level of 86mg — the legal limit is 50mg.

The pair were taken to hospital where the passenger was diagnosed with six broken ribs, a fracture to her spine, a sternal fracture, a broken forearm as well as a liver laceration.

Sarker told police he "hit a bump in the road and slid out", a police summary said.

Counsel John Westgate indicated the man would apply for a discharge without conviction, which was scheduled to be heard in January.
