'Phenomenal' dogs catch bunch of bungling youngsters

Three young girls and a boy have been caught after a bungled burglary attempt at a Caversham pub at the weekend.

Inspector Wil Black, of Dunedin, said the group of young people broke into the Carisbrook Hotel in South Rd but fled without taking anything.

The group were tracked by dogs and apprehended that same night.

They would be referred to Youth Aid.

Insp Black, who moved south last year and has taken over the role of Otago Coastal area prevention manager, said he had been blown away by the calibre of the Dunedin dog section.

"The dog section that we've got here are phenomenal, they're just world class.

"The stuff that they do ... each of them is just such a high performer.''
