Pursued driver 'abandoned car on train tracks'

A driver led police on a chase from Dunedin to the Taieri at the weekend, eventually abandoning his car on a railway line before being apprehended by a dog team.

The pursuit began when a suspicious vehicle allegedly fled police early Saturday morning after being signalled to stop in Kaikorai Valley Rd.

A police spokeswoman said an officer in a patrol car gave chase along the road and on to the Southern Motorway, before the man drove down the Green Island off-ramp, then immediately back on to the motorway.

The car continued heading south on State Highway 1 before turning off and heading through Momona near Dunedin Airport.

Shortly after, the fleeing driver is alleged to have turned his car on to train tracks in Henley where it  became stuck.  He allegedly abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot but was apprehended by a police dog team and arrested.

The spokeswoman said the man would appear in court on Friday, facing a range of driving charges.
