Small-town panty thief allegedly travelled south for raids

A 65-year-old man arrested for burglary in Dunedin at the weekend had travelled south from a small town to steal women's clothing from city flats, police allege.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin said the man was arrested late on Saturday returning to a bush where he had stashed his alleged ill-gotten garments after burglaries in the Cargill St area.

He was tracked by a police dog and its handler before his arrest in Royal Tce.

The man was not known to Dunedin police and had travelled south from a small town in North Otago to allegedly pilfer the clothing, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

Police would not comment on the nature of the items stolen but they are understood to include women's underwear.

The man will appear tomorrow in the Dunedin District Court on burglary charges.

Police are investigating links with other similar offending targeting flats in the city.
