Police are seeking two young men in a dark-coloured car after a Waikouaiti dairy was burgled early yesterday.

The men - caught on video - smashed the front door about 1.30am and took cash and goods from the Waikouaiti Food Centre.

Senior Constable Lesley Eason, of Waikouaiti, said it was a ''smash and grab''-type incident, and was carried out by two offenders, both believed to be male.

The store manager, who did not want to be named, said he was still doing stocktakes and tallying up what had been taken.

''Two young [guys] came, smashed the front door and got in.''

The shop was closed and no-one was behind the counter at the time.

''The glass was broken all over the floor.''

It was the first time the shop had been burgled, and it came as a shock.

The community had rallied around and had been very supportive, he said.

''[It was quite a shock] for everyone in this town. It's not often these things happen here.''

He had footage of the men which had been supplied to the police, and he believed they were possibly in their teens.

Snr Const Eason said she believed they could have been older.

She understood the men were not local and were probably travelling through Waikouaiti.

The vehicle they were in appeared to be a station wagon, possibly an older model Subaru, and it was blue or black.
