A prominent Dunedin sportsman has had his name suppressed over allegations of serious domestic violence.
The 25-year-old appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard for the safety of others following an alleged incident, which occurred on July 16.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment.
The man's name was suppressed by Judge Emma Smith and she also granted an application by the man's employer — which had legal representation in court — to have its name and the defendant's occupation kept under wraps.
Police supported suppression, the court heard.
Counsel John Westgate entered a not guilty plea on behalf of the defendant and elected trial by jury.
The sportsman was remanded on bail.
He will appear again in court in December when the issue of suppression will be reviewed.
