Teen admits ransacking South Dunedin dairy

Two youths have appeared in court after an early morning masked ransacking of a South Dunedin dairy.

A 15-year-old appeared in the Dunedin Youth Court yesterday charged with aggravated burglary.

He admitted the charge and was remanded on bail to appear again in September.

Judge David Robinson warned the offender there would be "real consequences" if he breached bail.

"This is an incredibly serious charge that you’re facing," the judge said.

The youth was directed to attend a family group conference, a meeting where young offenders, their family, victims and professionals discuss the crime and create a plan to address it and support the youth’s rehabilitation.

The Otago Daily Times understands the other defendant, also aged 15, appeared in the Youth Court last week and is expected to enter a plea next month.

The court appearances came after two offenders were caught on CCTV ransacking the Balmoral Dairy in Hillside Rd about 2.30am on July 8.

Wearing black hoods and masks, the pair can be seen moving quickly around the shop and attempting to open the cash register.

At the time, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the cash register and cigarette locker had been tampered with, but not opened by the perpetrators.

Balmoral Dairy owner Chris Au Yeung said the offenders stole a tray of energy drinks, lighters, cigarette paper, chewing gum, lollies and spare change.

All up, he estimated they had taken less than $100 worth of products, but described the mess left behind as "crazy" and "unnecessary".
