Crucifixion to be commemorated

The crucifixion of Christ will be commemorated in Dunedin on Good Friday, during ecumenical cross processions.

With the long-range weather forecast looking promising, the Rev Peter Stapleton, of St Nicholas' Anglican Church, said Waverley's procession of the cross would begin at St Philip's Union Church, in Belford St, at 9.30am and end with a service at St Alphonsus' Church, in Larnach Rd, at 10am.

‘‘It is an important event, and it gives people a sense what the day must have been like for Christ.''

Northeast Valley Baptist Church minister, the Rev Steven O'Connor, said the Northeast Valley cross procession would begin at 11am, after a short service at the Northeast Valley Baptist Church, at 10.15am.

The procession would visit churches along the way, before a service at the Dunedin Botanic Garden at 11.30am.

The procession of the cross in Mosgiel will begin at St Mary's Catholic Church, in Church St, at 8.45am, visiting churches along the way before ending at St Luke's on the Taieri Anglican Church in Gordon Rd, at 10am.

Sr Noreen McGrath said Easter was a time to reflect on what happened to Christ, and how his messages were still relevant to the world.
