Katherine Halkett has a sweet tooth.

And it is something the SPCA Otago volunteer will share with Dunedinites as she prepares to bake and sell 60 cupcakes as part of SPCA Cupcake Day on August 25.

''I will be busy but I am super-excited. I am going to decorate each cupcake ... dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, cows and sheep.

"They will look so cool. I am doing this for the animals ... to help them,'' she said.

Last year, cupcake sales and donations raised $5128 in Dunedin and Otago.

''Cupcake Day is really important. Everyone loves cupcakes. It is a good way to raise money.

"The money will help with immunisations, desexing and microchipping animals,'' she said.

There are many ways you can get involved with the SPCA's sweetest fundraiser.

You can register as an individual, a school or as a team to bake cupcakes and sell them.

There is also a ''meet your match'' programme which enables businesses or organisations to pre-order cupcakes from bakers and have them delivered.

Mrs Halkett, who has only been volunteering at the SPCA for six weeks, enjoys helping make a difference.

''It feels good to be able to help the animals when people don't give them the love, attention and care they need.

"People are so mean to them sometimes. They don't give them the opportunity to be really good pets.

"Some are so scared when they get here. You make a difference when you see them well and happy and someone comes to adopt them,'' she said.
