Helen Bremner's wedding bouquet was filled with cyclamen.

Sixty-five years on, gifts of the flowers brought back memories of the day she married husband Jack.

Mr and Mrs Bremner celebrate their sapphire wedding anniversary on Sunday.

Mrs Bremner (83) believed respect and being well suited were keys to their successful marriage.

Mr Bremner (86) added trusting each other absolutely to the list.

"It's also quite important to have the same moral values," she said.

The pair met in church after Mrs Bremner's sister encouraged her to go along to meet a group of young men.

When she arrived, it was Mr Bremner in a "striking blue jacket" who caught her attention.

While it was the "mischievous look in her eye" which sparked his interest.

She was just 15 when he first asked her to marry him, but it was not until he was on final leave from the army in 1943 that they tied the knot.

She was 18, attending teachers college, and he was 21.

"We hadn't intended to marry so soon, but the war changed everything," she said.

Due to rationing, their wedding was a small affair.

"We had few guests and no long dress," she said.

After serving mostly in Italy, Mr Bremner returned to New Zealand and went on to become a teacher too.

The couple moved from Auckland to Dunedin in 1966 when Mr Bremner began teaching at Kings High School and went on to become the rector.

Mr Bremner was the first New Zealander to be awarded the Wolf Fisher Fellowship for teaching in 1953.

The pair have three children, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

They enjoyed getting older together and Mrs Bremner still calls her husband "Darling".

"You don't worry about so many things when your older, it's more relaxing," she said.
