A South Dunedin cycling initiative has pedalled its way to a $20,000 donation from the Otago Community Trust.

The Dunedin City Council's South Dunedin Cycling Project delivers cycle skills training programmes in the area, where access to transport has been identified as an issue.

Co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty said the aim was to increase participation in cycling and give the community skills to use the city's new cycle infrastructure.

Initiatives included skills training for South Dunedin schools, training community leaders to teach cycle skills training and establishing a cycle and helmet library.

The donation was among a total of $207,430 given to 37 organisations in October.

Other notable donations included $20,000 to Fairfield School, towards a community meeting space and toilet facilities in a new classroom block.

The trust also supported the Dunedin Pride 2014 Festival, the South Dunedin Street Festival and the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations.

This weekend's Dunedin Santa Parade was given $15,000 towards organising costs.
