A cyclist has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a truck in central Dunedin this afternoon.

A police spokesman said they were called to the collision at the corner of Castle St and St Andrew St, on SH1 heading south, about 3.45pm.

The cyclist was responsive after the crash, the spokesman said.

A St John spokesman said the cyclist was taken to Dunedin Hospital emergency department with serious injuries.

A witness at the scene said police were speaking to a "distraught" man who was driving the small commercial truck involved in the crash.

The bicycle was damaged by the collision and by 4pm the cyclist had been taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Traffic was starting to clear by 4pm.
