Everyone knows there is no such thing as a free breakfast - there is always a catch.

So when free breakfast was offered in the Octagon yesterday morning, no-one was surprised when several hundred people turned up, riding bicycles.

It was part of Spokes Dunedin's annual Bike Breakfast, which provides city cyclists with an opportunity to give feedback on cycling in Dunedin, check some of the latest cycling technology and get a quick tune up.

Spokes Dunedin chairman Jon Dean was delighted with this year's turnout, which organisers said topped 700.

''It was definitely busier than previous years.

''It shows the Dunedin cycling community is growing and it's strong.

''One of the things which I find particularly pleasing is the broad range of cyclists at the event, from the mountain bikers and road cyclists to e-bikers.''

''There were heaps of electric bikes this year.

''The numbers are clearly growing.''

He said people had come from as far away as Port Chalmers, Waitati and Mosgiel.

One thing you can rely on cyclists for is their great desire for free stuff. Free cycle lanes, free DCC preferential treatment, free tunnels, even free food. Free equality in paying their way, not so much.

Jon Dean says 700 people is a great turnout, I think it represents just how few people are benefiting from ratepayers largesse. Half of 1% of Dunedin's population turn up for a free feed. Yes, this really shows how few people ride bikes.

Old cyclists can't get up that early. It's easy to disparage a movement with the static statistics of Dunedin. How often do you see a crowd of this size in the Octagon with a purpose other than to sink more p**s?
